Modrinth modpack format explained • PackShift
A .mrpack file is Modrinth's official modpack distribution format. It bundles everything needed to install a Minecraft modpack into a single archive, but it's not a standard ZIP — launchers like CurseForge or the vanilla launcher can't open it directly.
A .mrpack is essentially a ZIP archive containing:
modrinth.index.json — the manifest listing every mod, version, download URL, and file hashoverrides/ — optional config files, resource packs, and other files to place in your Minecraft directoryModrinth-native. Contains a manifest + overrides. Needs the Modrinth App or conversion to use elsewhere.
Mods in mods/, configs at root. Works with CurseForge, Prism, MultiMC, ATLauncher, vanilla.
CurseForge-specific ZIP structure. Not directly compatible with .mrpack without conversion.
| Format | Used By | Direct Launch Support |
|---|---|---|
.mrpack | Modrinth App | Modrinth App only |
| Standard ZIP | CurseForge, Prism, MultiMC, ATLauncher, Vanilla | All major launchers |
Not every launcher supports Modrinth's .mrpack format. If you use CurseForge, Prism Launcher, MultiMC, ATLauncher, or a dedicated server host, you need a standard ZIP archive. PackShift converts your .mrpack to ZIP in your browser — no uploads, all mods downloaded from Modrinth's CDN.
